Created in collaboration with graphic designer, Nathan Roth, Gaol examines the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 through a blend of photography and archival material, offering a visual and historical exploration of one of England’s most infamous witch trials. Through the medium of analogue photography and detailed research, the book investigates the intersection of superstition, mass hysteria, and injustice that shaped the fates of the accused. The photographs are accompanied by manipulated archival material, providing glimpses into the lives and perception of the accused witches. Printed in Bath, England, and hand-bound with a screen-printed cover, Gaol is a carefully crafted tribute to those who suffered, serving as a reflection on the enduring consequences of corrupt authority, mass fear, as well as the dangers of superstition and the vulnerability of marginalised people, particularly women.
